Walter Alcorn Selected as Citizen of the Year

Planning Commissioner Walter Alcorn will be honored as the 2011 Citizen of the Year at the annual awards banquet of the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations ("Federation") and SAIC on Sunday, March 25 at the Tysons Corner Crowne Plaza Hotel. Commissioner Alcorn has served At-Large on the Fairfax County Planning Commission since 1997 and currently serves as its Vice Chairman. He resides in Reston with his wife and two children.

In addition, the Federation will recognize three community leaders with the 2011 Citation of Merit awards - Ellie Ashford of Annandale for enhancing dialogue on diverse issues such as land use, schools, and crime through her community based Annandale Blog; Corazon Foley of Springfield for championing the creation of a Senior Center Without Walls for the health and well-being of elder residents in West Springfield and Burke; and Terry Maynard of Reston for leading on the re-development of Reston and advocating for Metro’s Silver Line.

Furthermore, a Special Gratitude Award will be presented to former Braddock District Planning Commissioner Suzanne Harsel for over 30 years of dedicated service to the residents of Braddock District and Fairfax County.

The Federation, established in 1940, is the countywide voice for homeowner, civic, and community associations. An all-volunteer organization, The Federation works on issues that impact Fairfax County residents, including education, transportation, the environment, human services, land use, the county budget, and state and federal legislative issues.
