Art Wells

In Memoriam for Art Wells

Art served the Federation as:
  • Federation President (2001-2003)
  • Braddock District Council representative (since at least 2010)

Art Wells had a long history of public service to our country and area.

  • Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.)
  • He served as Director of Professional Services and Business Manager of Cypress International until his retirement in September 2000
  • On May 12, 2018 Arthur David Wells (88), Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Annandale, VA peacefully passed away with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Bonnie L. Wells. Devoted father of Joy Lynn Wells Taylor and Mark Scott Wells. Son of Loretto Wells and Hugh K. Wells. Brother of David Wells and Rita Chestnut. Uncle to Cathy, Helen, Jane, Carol, and John. A proud grandfather to five grandchildren, he was raised in Paw Paw, Illinois and commissioned from West Point in 1953.
  • COL Wells attended the Pakistani Army Command & Staff College, the U.S. Army War College and served on the staff and faculty of the Army Artillery and Missile School. He also earned a MBA from the University of Alabama in 1966. His 30 years of active duty service included overseas tours in Germany, Pakistan, and Vietnam. During his 22 months in Vietnam, he served as a district advisor, on the Joint Staff and as a Field Artillery commander. Troop assignments included the 1st Armored Division, 11th Airborne Division (where he commanded a battery as a First Lieutenant), the 24th Infantry Division, and the 1st Infantry Division. U.S. Military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legions of Merit (four awards), the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal (two awards), the Air Medal (seven awards), the Army Commendation Medal (two awards and valor citation), the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
  • After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1983, he joined Cypress International as a Director of Professional Services and Business Manager until his retirement in September 2000.
  • COL Wells was also very active in various civic activities, including as a past President of the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations.
  • Visitation will be held on May 22, 2018, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd, Fairfax VA, from to 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass will be offered at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland Way, Annandale VA, on May 23, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. James Catholic Church, 221 Kirke Gate, Lee IL 60530.

James Scott

In Memoriam for James Scott

Jim served Fairfax County and was honored by the Federation as:
  • Citizen of the Year (1990)
  • Special Gratitude Award (2013)

Jim Scott had a long history of public service to Fairfax County.

  • Providence District Supervisor
  • Virginia State Delegate representing the 53rd district
  • He served as community affairs executive with Inova Health Systems.

Charles Dane

In Memoriam for Charles Dane

Charlie served the Federation and was honored by the Federation as:
  • Citation of Merit Recipient (2010)
  • First Vice President
  • Education Committee Chair
  • Land Use Committee Chair
  • Resolutions Committee Chair

Charlie Dane of Annandale had a long history of public service to Fairfax County.

  • He was been associated with the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations for many years, briefly serving as Chair of the Land Use Committee, and then later as First Vice President.
  • For almost ten years, he served as Chair of the Federation's Education Committee.
  • He served for two years as co-chair and as a member of the Fairfax County School Board's Advisory Committee of Human Relations.
  • He was a member of the Fairfax County Public School Superintendent's Business and Community Advisory Council.
  • After attending School Board retreats, work sessions, and selected committee meetings, Dr. Dane offered ideas on educational and administrative practices to improve public education.
  • He participated in the annual review of scholarship applications submitted to College Access Fairfax.
  • In addition to education pursuits, Dr. Dane has served for over eight years as the Braddock District representative on the Fairfax County Commission on Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation and serves as the Commission's Vice-Chair.
  • He also participated as a member of the Braddock District Citizens Budget Committee.
  • As a retired federal employee (Chief, Office of Scientific Authority, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), he was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association and has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President, of the Annandale NARFE Chapter 1159.
  • Dr. Dane previously served as Area Improvement Chair of his Stone Haven Civic Association, and coordinated the association's biennial home tour event to encourage others to remodel and improve their homes and yards.

Bill Hanks

Bill served the Federation and was honored by the Federation as:

He served Fairfax County in numerous other capacities, including:
Treasurer of the Fairfax Committee of 100
and AHOME Board Member.

Sally Ormsby

Sally served the Federation as
  • President
  • Citizen of the Year Chair
  • Legislative Chair
  • Budget Chair
and Fairfax County in numerous other capacities,
most recently as the elected Chair of the
Northern Virginia Soil & Water Conservation District

We are all poorer for the loss of these and other public-spirited members of the Fairfax County Community.
